In case you're not already convinced... - 02-27-2009

For decades, natural food advocates have been saying that foods raised with attention to the well-being of the ecosystem must also be better for humans.  This argument is in alignment with one of the oldest teachings of all spiritual traditions: "as above, so below," or "the microcosm is the macrocosm."  Still, our modern Western minds, with their ingrained habits of separating and dividing, have tended to think, "Gee, that sounds nice, but it is really true?

Study after study has suggested that organically grown veggies and fruits and animals brought to maturity with exercise, fresh air, and a diet resembling what their bodies evolved eating have higher nutrient value than agribusiness-produced food--what I call "tortured food."  But in case you're not already convinced, click here to read yet another study which arrives at the same conclusion. (To read or download a longer piece (in PDF format) with an overview of over 100 studies which have confirmed the value of organically raised foods, click here.)

Despite the tanking economy, sales of organic and local food continue to grow, albeit more slowly than in previous years.  Apparently more and more of us recognize that buying such food is not a luxury, but a critical investment in our personal and collective future.  When we feel frightened about money, it's easy to think that the $4.50 organic eggs are too expensive and reach for the tortured-chicken eggs instead.  The next time you feel tempted, remember that you truly are what you eat.  When you're already stressed and frightened, the last thing you need is to take in food from an animal who was desperately stressed and frightened throughout its life!
